Om Chanting: An Alternate medicine for Thyroid Hormone Imbalance

Position and functions of the Thyroid gland

The thyroid gland is situated just bottom of the larynx. It is controlled by the thyroid–stimulating hormone (TSH) produced by the Pituitary gland. Thyroid gland secrets three main hormones such as 3, 5, 3’-tri-iodo-l-thyronine (T3), calcitonin, and 3, 5, 3’, 5’-tetraiodo-l-thyronine (or) thyroxin (T4). Several studies involving animals and human beings indicated that cognitive ability is mainly controlled by T3 and T4 hormones. Moreover, the hormones control the overall metabolism of the body and oxygen intake. Mainly, calcitonin is vital for balancing blood calcium and phosphate levels. Thyroid hormone imbalance causes fatigue, weight gain, muscle pains, and despair and affects thinking ability. The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located at the front of your neck under your skin. It’s a part of the endocrine system and controls many of your body’s important functions by producing and releasing (secreting) certain hormones. The thyroid’s main job is to control the speed of your metabolism (metabolic rate), which is the process of how the body transforms the food you consume into energy. All of the cells in the body need energy to function

Mechanism of Om Chanting on balancing Thyroid hormone

According to the yogic principle, diseases are caused by to disturbance of the homeostatic balance between the body and mind (psycho-physiological balance). The psycho-physiological balance can be disturbed by internal stimuli such as lust, anger, desire, arrogance, ardor, worry, and anxiety as well as external factors such as physical, chemical, and biological agents. Whenever the a loss of balance in the mind due to internal stimuli, the life force in the body is troubled and causes disturbance in breath which affects the central nervous system and hypothalamic and pituitary glands. This may affect the release of the proper amount of TSH which controls the Thyroid gland. Thus, the thyroid gland is unable to produce the necessary level of T3 and T4 hormones causing hypothyroidism. Chanting vedic mantras is highly effective in aligning the endocrine systems in the right manner. Vibrations caused by chanting mantras facilitate the endocrine systems to release the necessary amount the hormones to regulate the daily metabolism. According to the Mandukya Upanishad, tangible matters are manifested through the vibration caused by the Akshara-barman the sound “OM”. Moreover, the Upanishad and many Hindu kinds of literature including Tamil Thirumuraigal described that chanting the “OM” mantra discharges mental stress, anxiety, and depression and enhances the calmness and intelligent quota in mind. Chanting “Oooooooo Mmmm” sounds causes vibrations in the chest, sternum, and throat which give a healthy massage effect on the thyroid gland to work properly and release its hormones at the necessary level. The proper way to chant “OM” mantra is given here. It is important to follow the instructions step by step as mentioned below.

  1. Sit comfortably in a calm and pollution-free place
  2. Breath in and fill the abdomen, chest, and throat with oxygen
  3. Use about 70% of the inhaled oxygen for chanting “O” sound
  4. The remaining oxygen can be used to chant the “M” sound
  5. Ensure that all the inhaled oxygen was thoroughly breath out the chanting of “M”
  6. Ensure that the abdomen, chest, and throat are empty after the chanting of the “M” sound
  7. Then, breathe in and repeat this way of chanting “OM” initially practiced this three times in the morning and evening, preferentially on an empty stomach.

During the “OM” chanting practice, it is necessary to keep on concentrating to control the breath for using the inhaled oxygen to chant “Oooooooo” and “Mmmm”. This practice is also useful to keep the homeostatic balance between the body and mind as well as make the endocrine system healthy.

Conclusion

Based on recent studies, it has been reported that about ten percent of the population in India is suffering from different kinds of thyroid disorders such as hypothyroidism, goiter, and thyroid hormone imbalance symptoms. Nowadays, the medical world treats thyroid disorders by using hormones, hormonal therapy, and surgical procedures. In addition, doctors recommended beta-blockers to suppress the effects of hyperthyroidism. Moreover, this kind of medication consumes high cost as well as requires considerable span to recover from the problem, and may also cause side effects. However, OM chanting is risk-free without cost and highly effective in normalizing and stimulating the thyroid gland. Hence, it is considered as a highly suitable alternate way to treat the thyroid problems.
